Cosmetic Dermatology

  • Anti-Aging Facial Treatment
    ideal if you have:

Mature skin with visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, dehydration, and loss of texture.

    HOW IT WORKS:

This revitalizing treatment works by stimulating aging skin in three vital areas critical to a more youthful appearance: hydration, tone and texture.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

A more even skin tone, smoother, more healthy-looking skin, and firmer texture. The moisture and nutrients delivered to skin throughout the treatment aid in the prevention of future signs of aging.

  • Botox® And Dysport®
    ideal if you have:

Frown lines between the eyebrows that give the appearance of a permanent scowl, crow's feet around the eyes, a dimpled or cobblestoned chin, and (less commonly) Botox® and Dysport® can be used to correct “bunny lines” on the nose—the downward turning of the corner of the lips that comes with aging—and lines on the neck.

    HOW IT WORKS:

Botox® and Dysport® are the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. They can be performed in just a few minutes, with results in 24 to 48 hours. The muscles of the face repeatedly contract and tighten over time, and this can cause wrinkles. Botox® and Dysport® work by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscles, resulting in the reduction of muscle activity which in turn reduces the appearance of wrinkles and the formation of lines that form over time. As the muscles relax, skin becomes smoother and deep lines begin to fill in with repeated treatments.

Both Botox® and Dysport® are safe and FDA-approved. The best way to ensure you receive the results you are looking for is to only receive injections from a highly experienced provider, such as Dr. Sullivan. Dr. Sullivan will typically numb the area to be treated with an anesthetic cream prior to treatment to reduce any discomfort. You will be able to return to work within minutes after treatment. The differences between Botox® and Dysport® are subtle and the effects vary between treatment areas and among patients. Dr. Sullivan uses both products and will be happy to discuss the pros and cons of each product with a patient on an individual basis.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Botox® and Dysport® offer rapid results with very little risk, and improvement is seen within days and can last anywhere from 3 to 5 months. As the product wears off, muscle action returns gradually. The previously treated lines and wrinkles may then begin to reappear and will need to be treated again. With repeated treatment, the lines and wrinkles often appear less severe than before. Most patients find that as they begin to do either Botox® or Dysport® on a regular basis.

  • Botox® Hyperhidrosis
    ideal if you have:

Excessive sweating of the underarms or hands that interferes in your daily life or causes stress and discomfort.

    HOW IT WORKS:

This FDA-approved treatment blocks nerve impulses to the sweat glands in underarms and hands to stop the site from producing sweat. During this 10 to 15 minute procedure, Dr. Sullivan administers several injections to the affected area.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

While not a permanent solution to excessive sweating, most patients enjoy results for more than 6 months. In many cases, Botox® for Hyperhidrosis is covered by a patient’s health insurance.

  • Chemical Peels
    ideal if you have:

Acne, brown spots, fine lines, melisma, sun damage and/or wrinkles.

    HOW IT WORKS:

Dr. Sullivan and his team tailor chemical peels to specific parts of the body, such as face, neck, chest, back, arms, and legs. A chemical peel is a method where a solution of acid is applied to the skin, which causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. New regenerated skin grows in its place, reducing the appearance of lines and pigmentation. When considering peels of non-facial areas, it's important to realize that these areas do not heal as well as the face, and the desired results are not as predictable. It is important to note that you should never peel more than a small percentage of the body at one time in order to avoid any chance of potential toxicity. There are three basic types of chemical peels:

    • Superficial Peels

In this type of peel, alpha-hydroxy acid or another mild acid is applied topenetrate the outer layer of skin only. The resulting peel is mild and causes gentle exfoliation. This treatment can improve the appearance of skin discoloration and irregularly textured, rough skin.
    • Medium Peels

Either glycolic or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is applied to penetrate the outer and middle layers of the skin. This type of peel penetrates the dermal layer of the skin. In addition to improving brown spots, it can reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Medium depth peels can be used to treat some precancerous skin growths, i.e. actinic keratosis.
    • Deep Peels

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or phenol is applied to deeply penetrate the skin. This type of peel penetrates deep into the dermal layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. The treatment removes moderate lines and shallow scars. This peel is generally used only on the face.
    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Superficial chemicals peels cause mild stinging that lasts for only a few minutes. On the day of the peel there is generally some redness. Depending on the peel and the individual’s sensitivity there may be several days of light peeling which may require up to seven days of healing. Mild emollients should be applied until the skin heals, followed by daily use of sunscreen. Makeup can usually be worn the next day.

Medium to deep peels can result in more significant peeling that may require time away from work or school. The doctor may also prescribe medicines for pain relief during the peeling process. Medium peels require 7 to 10 days to heal. Treated skin will initially be red and swollen but then crusts and peels off. Ointment such as Vaseline or Aquaphor is applied daily. Makeup may be worn within approximately a week.  As old layers of skin are removed and new layers emerge, you’ll notice improved texture, clearer skin, and a more radiant complexion and tone.

  • Deep Pore Cleansing Facial
    ideal if you have:

Mild amounts of acne or are experiencing congested pores and unbalanced oil production.

    HOW IT WORKS:

This facial combines exfoliation—which removes dead skin cells on the outermost layers of the face—with a calming mask treatment that deeply cleanses and soothes pores, then gently helps reduce oil levels.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Skin looks healthier, more youthful, and clearer. Pores appear less visible after a deep cleansing, and a new layer of skin cells receives necessary hydration to keep future levels balanced and less prone to breakouts.

  • Dermaplaning
    ideal if you have:

A visible amount of fine vellus hair (commonly known as peach fuzz) around the face.

    HOW IT WORKS:

Using a very sharp, very fine blade, Dermaplaning safely and simply removes the very top layer of dead skin cells, in addition to peach fuzz and any other facial hair. This eliminates a common source of dirt and oils.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Skin feels and looks healthier, more youthful, and is less prone to oil build-up or cakey-looking makeup.

  • Juvéderm® And Juvederm Ultra®
    ideal if you have:

Facial wrinkles like the nasolabial lines (the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth,) as well as loss in volume in places like your cheeks and temples.

    HOW IT WORKS:

Juvederm®, and Juvederm Ultra® are gel-like substances composed of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally exists in the body. Within the human body, hyaluronic acid is found between the cells, where it provides the skin with its suppleness and flexibility. As we age, our bodiy’s own natural levels of hyaluronic acid decrease. This natural decrease in hyaluronic acid, combined with other factors, results in the appearance of wrinkles and smile lines over time. Treatment with Juvederm®, and Juvederm Ultra® replaces the lost hyaluronic acid, restoring the lost volume to smooth wrinkles and lines and adding fullness and/or volume.

What makes Juvederm Ultra® different from Juvederm® is the average size of the particles in the filler. Juvederm Ultra® contains larger particles, which makes it thicker than Juvederm® and thus a better choice for more severe facial wrinkles. There are minimal risks associated with dermal fillers, most of which can be avoided by choosing an experienced injector like those found at Sullivan Dermatology.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Juvederm®, and Juvederm Ultra® last from 6 months to one year depending on the product used and the patient’s metabolism.

It can also be used to restore lost volume in fine lines anywhere in the face for more a youthful, fresher appearance. Since it is a very soft filler, it can placed superficially to restore lines that were previously untreatable. Juvederm Volbella® XC is a gel-like substance composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally exists in the body. Within the human body, hyaluronic acid is found between the cells, where it provides skin with its suppleness and flexibility. As we age, our body’s own natural levels of hyaluronic acid decrease. This natural decrease in hyaluronic acid, combined with other factors, results in the appearance of wrinkles over time.

Treatment with Juvederm Volbella® XC replaces the lost hyaluronic acid, restoring the lost volume to smooth wrinkles and lines and adding fullness and/or volume. HOW IT WORKS:

Juvederm Voluma® XC is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler that lifts and contours the cheek and mid face. It can also be used to plump the lips and restore lost volume in places like the cheeks and temples for a more youthful appearance. Juvederm Voluma® XC is a gel-like substance composed of hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally exists in the body. Within the human body, hyaluronic acid is found between the cells, where it provides skin with its suppleness and flexibility. As we age our body’s own natural levels of hyaluronic acid decrease. This natural decrease in hyaluronic acid as we age, combined with other factors, results in the appearance of wrinkles and smile lines over time.

What makes Juvederm Voluma® XC different from other hyaluronic acid fillers is that it contains larger particles of hyaluronic, making it thicker than Juvederm® and thus a better choice for more severe facial wrinkles and/or deeper contouring.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Juvederm Voluma® XC fillers last up to two years, depending on the product used and the patient’s metabolism.

  • Kybella®
    ideal if you have:

A stubborn double chin but are not interested in surgery. Over a series of injections, Kybella®
will correct moderate to severe fat beneath the chin and neck area that you’d like removed, without the necessity of surgery.

    HOW IT WORKS:

Kybella® is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to remove the appearance of a “double chin.” Its active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule produced by the body that physically destroys fat cells. Once they are destroyed they are then unable to store or accumulate fat. Kybella® is administered as a series of injections to the desired treatment area every 4-6 weeks until the desired effect is achieved. Most patients do well after 3-6 treatments.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

With fat cells under the chin destroyed, patients notice a dramatic reduction in the area’s fullness, making for a leaner, thinner-looking profile.

  • Laser Hair Removal
    ideal if you have:

Unwanted excess hair in any area of the body, including face, beard area, legs, bikini area, and more. Dr. Sullivan’s office is especially experienced in treating people with darker skin types and has advanced lasers for this patient population.

    HOW IT WORKS:

A highly-focused beam of light is targeted directly into hair follicles, where it heats and eliminates them one by one. Skin and hair follicle pigmentation plays a significant role in this treatment’s effectiveness, and having experienced personnel select the correct laser is paramount. The Sullivan Dermatology team has extensive experience treating ethnic skin types and uses a laser system designed for ethnic skin types.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Laser hair removal will require a series of treatments over time to achieve the desired effect. Most people will see long-term hair removal, which may last for many years, but occasional maintenance treatments over time to maintain their degree of hair loss may be required. It is impossible to determine in advance how many treatments will be required to achieve the desired degree of hair removal, but the typical is 5 to 8.

  • Microdermabrasion
    ideal if you have:

Acne and other minor scarring, hyper-pigmentation, large pore size, fine lines, and other imperfections you’d like diminished.

    HOW IT WORKS:

During microdermabrasion a machine is utilized to remove the uppermost layer of the skin. This is performed either with a diamond tipped-wand or sand particles. Most commonly, small crystals are sprayed onto the skin to gently debride the outer layer of skin. Overall, this technique is less aggressive than standard dermabrasion. It is an exfoliation procedure that leaves skin looking more pliable and brighter.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

After microdermabrasion, the skin may be slightly irritated, dry or tight, but this generally lasts for no more than 24 hours.  During this period, Dr. Sullivan recommends you use a bland emollient and avoid sun exposure. After 24 hours, the use of makeup is acceptable.

Patients report noticing smoother skin texture and a plumping of the skin tone, as well as the diminished appearance of scarring, discoloration and fine wrinkles. Microdermabrasion is safe for all skin types and colors. It results in subtle changes, causing no skin color change or scarring. The procedure is generally pain-free and results in minimal downtime. Multiple sessions can improve the overall health and appearance of the skin.

  • Pigment Balancing Facial Masque
    ideal if you have:

Photo-damaged skin with visible hyperpigmentation and uneven variations in skin tone.

    HOW IT WORKS:

A high-performance brightening mask rich in anti-inflammatory agents is applied to target pigmentation, followed by a powerful peeling acid solution that works to accelerate the renewal process of new skin cells.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Variations in skin tone are diminished, revealing smoother, brighter-looking skin.

  • Radiesse®
    ideal if you have:

Smile lines (also called the nasolabial folds, which run from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth), marionette lines running downward from the corners of the mouth, pre-jowl, or loss of facial volume on either side of the chin, chin wrinkles, and oral commissure lines along the mouth that give the appearance of frowning.

    HOW IT WORKS:

Radiesse® is an injectable filler made of tiny calcium-based microspheres that works via two mechanisms. Once injected, not only does it immediately add volume but also over time, the microspheres are absorbed by the body’s natural mechanisms. The calcium microspheres are similar to minerals that are found naturally in the body. Over time, the body absorbs both the microspheres and gel, leaving behind only natural collagen. This process makes Radiesse® unique in that it acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. There are minimal risks associated with dermal fillers, most of which can be avoided by choosing an experienced injector, such as Dr. Sullivan.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

The production of natural collagen continues for several months beyond the initial effect of initial injection, and lasts one to two years in most patients.

  • Restylane® Lyft
    ideal if you have:

Facial wrinkles like the nasolabial lines (the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth,) as well as loss of volume in places like your lips, cheeks and temples.

    HOW IT WORKS:

Restylane® Lyft is a gel-like substance composed of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that naturally exists in the body. Within the human body, hyaluronic acid is found between the cells, where it provides skin with its suppleness and flexibility. As we age, our body’s own natural levels of hyaluronic acid decrease. This natural decrease in hyaluronic acid, combined with other factors, results in the appearance of wrinkles and smile lines over time. Treatment with Restylane® Lyft replaces the lost hyaluronic acid, restoring the lost volume to smooth wrinkles and lines or and adding fullness and/or volume. There are minimal risks associated with dermal fillers, most of which can be avoided by choosing an experienced injector, such as Dr. Sullivan.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Restylane® Lyft lasts from 6 to 9 months depending on the patient’s metabolism.

  • Sclerotherapy
    ideal if you have:

Small visible veins (also known as spider veins) that you would like to see removed for a more youthful skin surface.

    HOW IT WORKS:

Sclerotherapy involves injecting a solution, often a strong salt-water solution, directly into the vein that causes the vessel to be reabsorbed by the body. As the collapsed vein is reabsorbed into skin, the evidence of the offending vessel eventually fades. Sclerotherapy is the best treatment for spider veins of the legs. The treatment is minimally invasive. Patients lie on their back and after the treatment area is cleansed with alcohol, Dr. Sullivan uses a fine needle to slowly insert the solution into the vein. Some patients experience minor stinging or cramps when the needle is inserted but it lasts for only a few seconds.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

The decreased appearance of small or spider veins on the skin. Treated veins tend to fade within days to weeks, but it may take longer to see the full results. Usually it takes several sessions to achieve desired results. Risks include bruising, small sores, hyperpigmentation and telangiectasia.

  • Sculptra®
    ideal if you have:

Deep wrinkles and loss in facial volume due to aging, and would like to restore skin’s structure and firmness for a more youthful appearance.

    HOW IT WORKS:

Sculptra® is an injectable liquid containing micro-beads of poly-L-lactic acid, the same material that some absorbable sutures are made of. When these micro-beads of poly-L-lactic acid are injected into the skin they are slowly absorbed and result in the formation of new collagen by the body. Once injected, Sculptra® works deep within the skin to stimulate your skin’s own collagen production to increase overall facial volume. Generally, Sculptra® is administered as a series of three sets of injections over a 3 to 4 month period and results in a gradual restoration of dermal fullness. Sculptra® is used to add natural-looking volume to areas of the face. It is best for adding volume to hollow cheeks, softening cheekbones, filling nasolabial folds, hollow chins, undefined jawlines, hollow temples, and some body sites.

Sculptra® is different from Juvederm®/Restylane® in that it adds volume to the face and fills grooves and hollows. It is generally more lifting and better for the aging face that has wrinkles created by loss of volume. Juvederm® and Restylane® fill specific wrinkles and lines. Filler choice depends on a number of factors such as the location and depth of the wrinkle and/or defect, the desired degree of correction, and the age of the patient. Cost is also an important consideration, and Dr. Sullivan welcomes patients to come in for a free consultation to discuss which options fulfills their needs.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Fuller looking, firmer skin. With increased collagen production, skin looks visibly younger and deep wrinkles are diminished. Results can last up to two years.

  • Thread Lifts (Nova Threads / PDO Threads®)
    ideal if you have:

Loss of collagen in the skin and face, particularly in the neck, jawline or cheeks, resulting in skin that appears to sag or lack firmness.

    HOW IT WORKS:

PDO Absorbable Threads® are a synthetic surgical suture composed of polydioxanone, the same material used in surgeries, that is completely absorbed by the skin. Threads made from PDO are injected into the skin in two types of procedures. The first involves injecting a net-like mesh under the skin that serves as a foundation for new collagen production. The second technique involves using barbed PDO threads that provide a grip underneath the skin. The sutures are then pulled in either one or two directions for instant skin repositioning. The second technique instantly tightens sagging skin and both techniques stimulate collagen production over time.

    RESULTS INCLUDE:

Both procedures result in the rebuilding of collagen, which gives the skin a secure, natural-looking lift. Use of the mesh tightens the skin from within, without any drastic change. Use of the second technique produces more dramatic and immediate results with noticeable tightening of lax skin; over the next six months, the procedure continues stimulating collagen formation.
